Our story

George Okulicz has been a practicing taxation specialist for more than 30 years, working in various small to large accounting practices across Perth.

During his many years advising individuals and small business clients, George noticed there was a gap between spending time really listening to clients’ needs, and providing tailored services to meet the needs of individuals and small business.

Realising his passion in work comes from building “real” relationships with his clients, George recruited his highly organised wife, Deirdre, and started a two person accounting firm – GPS Business Solutions (George Okulicz & Co) in 1998.

Together, they have built their current team to form a close-knit unit of accountants, administration and business professionals.

Over the years the business has continually focused on providing tailored, professional and value-for-money services. The team is committed to delivering integrity, understanding, and results to all its clients – many of whom have been with the business since before George started GPS.  We think that’s a pretty good measure of success.

SERVICES

Income tax returns for individuals, companies, trusts, partnerships and superannuation funds

Whether you are an individual simply needing to lodge a tax return or a business owner with more complex accounting needs, our experienced team is on hand to provide the best advice and the best possible outcome.

Tax planning

We recommend avoiding late nights and last minute stress when it comes to tax time by being organised with your information and reporting throughout the year.  Tax Planning should be carried out before the end of the financial year to enable strategies to be implemented so that your taxation liability can be minimised.

Preparation of financial statements

Financial statements are a formal record of the financial activities and position of your business. These statements are important for checking the health of your finances and are integral documents for external organisations such as banks.  Our team can prepare accurate and detailed financial statements, advising you on what they mean, and how to use them to suit your requirements.

Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSF)

Self-managed superannuation funds are heavily regulated and require financial statements and income tax returns lodged on a timely basis.  At SEER, we specialise in preparing and lodging your SMSF returns.

Goods and services tax (GST)

Does your business need to register for GST? What does this involve and how do you do a Business Activity Statement (BAS) once you are registered? GST does not need to be complicated or stressful for your business. Let us offer some professional advice and work with you to manage GST compliance easily.

Capital gains tax (CGT)

Simply put, capital gains tax applies to capital gain (or profit) made from selling an asset. There are some specific exemptions, such as the family home. If you are thinking of disposing of an asset, give us a call first, to minimise your tax liability.

Fringe benefits tax (FBT)

Fringe benefits tax (FBT) is tax that employers pay on certain benefits (e.g. company car) they provide to employees, their families or associates. If you are an employer wanting to structure benefits more effectively and reduce FBT, our experienced team can work with you on the right approach.

Australian Securities Investment Commission (ASIC) compliance and reporting

If you are a registered business (any type or size), you will need to comply with the rules and regulations set by ASIC to ensure your business operates legitimately. If you are ever unsure about any aspect of your business operations, pick up the phone or send us an email to check. Remember, it’s better to ask a quick question than be sorry!

At SEER Accounting & Tax Wangara, we specialise in providing a range of taxation accounting solutions for individuals, families and businesses.

We understand the world of taxation can be daunting. An important part of our service is breaking down the complexities into easy to understand terms. Our highly trained and experienced team will then assist you to explore your options and together reach the best solution for you. At the core, we aim to help you, your family and your business minimise tax liability and maximise your long-term success.

Other services

If you or your business require a personalised service not listed above, please let us know. Even if we can’t help you, we almost certainly can point you in the right direction to someone we know and trust to meet your requirements.

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

We provide helpful tax checklists for individuals, entities and super funds.

Simply download the checklist appropriate to your situation below:

  • Individual Tax Return Checklist
  • Entity Tax Return Checklists
  • Super Fund Tax Return Checklists

Lodgement dates vary for individuals and businesses, depending on specific circumstances and/or prior lodgement history.

We recommend contacting our office to discuss your situation.

Generally speaking, you must keep your business records and receipts for five years from the date you lodge your income tax return.  If you have made capital purchases and have claimed a deduction for decline in value (depreciation) you must keep your records for five years from the date of your last claim for decline in value.

You are able to claim expenditure for replacing, insuring and repairing tools of trade used for earning your income.  The amount you can claim will depend on the records you have kept and how much you have spent on maintaining the tools.  If you are unsure on what you can claim from your equipment or tools purchase, please contact our office and one of our experienced team members will be able to advise you.

If technical books, trade books or journals are necessary to fulfil your job function efficiently, then the cost of their purchase is tax deductible. Please make sure you keep the record of purchase for these items when submitting your tax return details. You will also need to retain the receipts for five years from the date you lodge your income tax return.

Purchases made by outdoor workers for sunscreen lotion, sunglasses and hats for use at work are deductible.  The claim must be substantiated and adjusted for private use.

Yes you can, by using the cents/km method up to a maximum of 5000kms.  This calculation includes all running costs and depreciation calculations.

Whilst you are not required to keep a log book, the Australian Taxation Office may ask you to show how you worked out your business kilometres.

We recommend you keep a log book for at least 12 weeks to calculate your business percentage and retain all of your receipts for your vehicle running costs.  This will ensure the maximum deduction you are entitled to is achieved.

Your travel must be relevant to your job function for you to claim a deduction for those expenses.  If this is the case, you can claim the cost of transportation, meals and incidentals.  If your travel involved an overnight stay, you would be able to also claim for accommodation.

The best business structure will depend on your circumstances and future plans. Please contact our office and one of our experienced team members will be able to provide you with the best advice and answer your questions.

You must register for GST if you run a business or other enterprise and your turnover is $75,000 or more.  If you are a taxi driver or Uber driver, you must register for GST regardless of your turnover.

There are several accounting software packages available.

We recommend MYOB Accounting Software.

As there are many available options to choose from, please contact us to discuss the version that best suits your needs.

SuperStream is an online standard system for processing superannuation data and payments electronically. SuperStream is the way businesses must pay employee superannuation guarantee contributions to super funds.

If you are an employer with 20 or more employees your Superstream deadline was 31 October 2015.

If you are an employer with 19 or fewer employees your Superstream deadline is 31 October 2016.

Further information is available from the Australian Taxation Office website: https://www.ato.gov.au/General/Other-languages/In-detail/Information-in-other-languages/SuperStream-employer-checklist/

Alternatively, please contact us if you require further clarification.

Superannuation contributions need to be paid on a quarterly basis, as outlined below:

  • July to September Quarter — 28 October
  • October to December Quarter — 28 January
  • January to March Quarter — 28 April
  • April to June Quarter — 28 July

Please note that if superannuation is not paid by these dates, the payments are not tax deductible.  Should you require all your superannuation contributions to be deductible in a financial year, the contribution must be received by the Fund before 30 June.

If you are a small business (19 or fewer employees),  superannuation contributions should now be paid through the Superannuation Clearing House or through your payroll software. You can register for the Superannuation Clearing House (free to use) here https://www.ato.gov.au/business/super-for-employers/paying-super-contributions/small-business-superannuation-clearing-house/

Please contact us if you require further clarification.

The Australian Taxation Office provides a useful questionnaire to help answer this question.  The questionnaire can be accessed here https://www.ato.gov.au/Calculators-and-tools/Employee-or-contractor/.
